19VANP22 Color Picture Tube
Overview
The 19VANP22 is an ultra-rectangular color picture tube featuring a Hi-Lite screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Designed for color television applications, it utilizes a three-gun delta configuration with the axes of the red, green, and blue electron guns tilted toward the tube axis. The tube operates in a blue-gun-down orientation and employs electrostatic unipotential focusing, magnetic convergence, and magnetic deflection. The screen is aluminized and utilizes P22 phosphor (rare-earth red, sulfide blue and green) with medium-short persistence to produce high-brightness color displays.
Physical and Mechanical Construction
The 19VANP22 is constructed with a polished filterglass faceplate that provides approximately 53% light transmission at the center, enhancing contrast. The envelope consists of a JEDEC No. FP161-3/4 V1 bulb panel and a JEDEC No. J160-3/4 B1/C1 bulb funnel. Implosion protection is provided by a banded design.
The screen contains approximately 382,000 dot trios, with a spacing of approximately 0.024 inches (0.61 mm) between adjacent trios. The tube weighs approximately 25 lb (11.4 kg) and has a preferred operating position with the anode bulb contact positioned on top.
The electrical interface is a Small-Button Diheptar 12-Pin base (JEDEC No. B12-244) with a JEDEC No. 14BH basing arrangement. Pin 5 aligns approximately with the anode bulb contact.
Heater and Electrical Connections
The heaters for the three electron guns are internally connected in series. The nominal heater current is 900 mA at a typical operating voltage of 6.3 V (AC or DC). Under standby conditions, the heater can be operated at 5.0 V, or at 6.0 V when transitioning from a 5.0-V standby state. The maximum allowable surge voltage is 9.5 V RMS. A series impedance of 100 kΩ to 1 MΩ is required in the DC biasing circuit.
The JEDEC No. 14BH basing connections are as follows:

Typical Operating Conditions
Under typical operating conditions, the heater is run at 6.3 V, and the anode is operated at 20 kV. Grid-No. 4 is adjusted to achieve optimal focus. For a color temperature of 9300 K + 27 M.P.C.D. and a raster size of 15.922 x 11.941 inches (404.42 x 303.30 mm), the white-light output measured over a 4-inch diameter area is 44 fL (151 Nits) at an anode current of 1000 µA.
X-Radiation and Safety Characteristics
Operation of the 19VANP22 at high anode voltages produces X-radiation. Under standard operating limits, the design-maximum X-radiation limit is 0.5 mR/h at an anode voltage of 27.5 kV and an anode current of 1000 µA. The maximum anode voltage at which X-radiation remains at or below 0.5 mR/h with a 300 µA anode current is 33 kV.
The isodose-rate limit for 0.5 mR/h begins at 35 kV at 0 µA anode current and slopes downward linearly to 30 kV at 1800 µA. At a constant anode current of 300 µA, X-radiation is negligible below 30 kV, but rises sharply to 1.0 mR/h at approximately 34.5 kV and reaches 10 mR/h at 38 kV.
Drive and Cutoff Characteristics
The grid-drive and cathode-drive characteristics of the 19VANP22 follow typical triode-like power-law curves. For any given video signal, higher cutoff voltages necessitate larger drive voltages to achieve equivalent anode current levels.
The relationship between the Grid-No. 1-to-cathode voltage and the Grid-No. 2-to-cathode voltage required for spot cutoff is linear. As the Grid-No. 1 voltage is made more negative, the spread between the minimum and maximum spot cutoff voltages increases.
