17BUP4 — Direct-View Cathode-Ray Picture Tube
The 17BUP4 is a direct-view, rectangular glass cathode-ray picture tube designed for television receiver applications. It features electrostatic focusing, magnetic deflection, a unipotential cathode, a gray filter faceplate, and an external conductive coating. The tube is designed to operate with an external single-field ion trap magnet.
The 17BUP4 is electrically and mechanically identical to the 17CBP4, with the sole distinction being that the 17BUP4 features an aluminized screen to enhance brightness and picture definition.
Mechanical Specifications and Optical Characteristics
The 17BUP4 is constructed with a rectangular glass envelope. Its physical dimensions and screen area are specified as follows:
The faceplate is a gray filter glass with an approximate light transmission of 74% at the center. The screen utilizes a sulfide-type P-4 phosphor, which provides a white fluorescent and phosphorescent color with short persistence.
Deflection is achieved magnetically, with approximate deflection angles of:
- Horizontal: 85°
- Vertical: 68°
- Diagonal: 90°
Electrical Connections and Basing
The tube utilizes a Small Shell Duodecal 6-Pin (B6-63) base with a 12L basing configuration. High-voltage connection to the anode (Grid No. 3 and Grid No. 5) is made via a Recessed Small Cavity Cap (J1-21). The bulb contact is aligned such that the J1-21 contact aligns with pin position #6 within a tolerance of ±30 degrees.
The pin connections, viewed from the bottom of the base, are:
The heater is rated for a nominal voltage of 6.3 V and a current of 0.6 A.
Interelectrode Capacitances
The approximate direct interelectrode capacitances of the 17BUP4 are:
- Cathode to all other electrodes: 5 µµf
- Grid #1 to all other electrodes: 6 µµf
- External conductive coating to anode: Minimum 1200 µµf, Maximum 1500 µµf
Electrical Ratings and Operating Conditions
The maximum ratings of the 17BUP4 are established under the Design Center System. These limits must be respected to ensure reliable operation and tube longevity.
