Power - Beam (NOT sweep) ·BeamPower
Beam-power output tube designed for automobile, battery-operated, and conventional radio receivers, with documented Class-A and push-pull audio power operation.
The 12V6GT is an octal-base, indirectly heated beam power pentode designed primarily for use in the audio output stages of alternating-current (AC) and storage-battery-operated receivers. It is particularly suited for automobile radio receivers operating from a 12-volt electrical system. By utilizing directed electron beam principles, the 12V6GT achieves high power sensitivity, high operating efficiency, and low third- and higher-order harmonic distortion at relatively low supply voltages.
In terms of electrical performance, the 12V6GT is identical to the 6.3-volt 6V6GTA and 6V6GT (as well as the miniature 6AQ5A), differing only in its heater ratings. It is also closely related to the 5V6GT, which is designed for series-string heater applications with controlled warm-up characteristics.
The 12V6GT features a coated unipotential cathode housed within a T-9 glass envelope. The tube is designed to operate in any mounting position. It is equipped with an intermediate-shell octal 7-pin base (conforming to JEDEC B7-7 or RETMA 7AC-NC configurations). Some variants may also utilize a short intermediate-shell octal base.
Viewed from the bottom of the base, the pin assignments are as follows:
| Pin Number | Electrode Connection |
|---|---|
| Pin 1 | No Connection (may be omitted on certain base styles) |
| Pin 2 | Heater |
| Pin 3 | Plate |
| Pin 4 | Grid No. 2 (Screen Grid) |
| Pin 5 | Grid No. 1 (Control Grid) |
| Pin 7 | Heater |
| Pin 8 | Cathode and Grid No. 3 (Beam Plates) |
The heater of the 12V6GT is designed for either AC or DC operation.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Nominal Heater Voltage | 12.6 V |
| Nominal Heater Current | 0.225 A |
| Heating Method | Indirectly heated, coated unipotential cathode |
Using the nominal values, the heater power consumption can be calculated as:
This power consumption is identical to that of the 6V6GTA ($6.3\text{ V} \times 0.45\text{ A} = 2.835\text{ W}$), demonstrating that the 12V6GT achieves the same thermal emission capability with half the current draw at twice the voltage, making it optimized for 12-volt automotive electrical systems.
The maximum allowable voltage difference between the heater and the cathode depends on the rating system applied:
Measured without an external shield, the approximate direct interelectrode capacitances of the 12V6GT are:
The 12V6GT can be operated as a single-tube Class A1 audio amplifier. The maximum ratings and typical operating conditions are detailed below.
The limits of the tube are defined under both the Design-Center and Design-Maximum rating systems:
| Parameter | Design-Center Limit | Design-Maximum Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Plate Voltage | 315 V | 350 V |
| Grid No. 2 (Screen) Voltage | 285 V | 315 V |

| Max. Grid No. 1 Circuit Resistance (Fixed Bias) | 0.1 MΩ | 0.1 MΩ |
| Max. Grid No. 1 Circuit Resistance (Cathode Bias) | 0.5 MΩ | 0.5 MΩ |
Three typical operating points are established for pentode-connected Class A1 service:

| Total Harmonic Distortion | 8% | 8% | 12% |
| Max.-Signal Power Output | 2.0 W | 4.5 W | 5.5 W |
When Grid No. 2 is connected directly to the plate, the 12V6GT operates as a power triode. Under these conditions, typical characteristics at a plate voltage of 250 V are:
For higher power output, two 12V6GT tubes can be configured in a push-pull Class AB1 arrangement. Typical operating values for a two-tube circuit are as follows:
| Parameter | Operating Point I | Operating Point II |
|---|---|---|
| Plate Voltage | 250 V | 285 V |
| Grid No. 2 Voltage | 250 V | 285 V |
| Grid No. 1 Voltage | -15 V | -19 V |
| Peak AF Grid-to-Grid Voltage | 30 V | 38 V |
| Zero-Signal Plate Current (2 tubes) | 70 mA | 70 mA |
| Max.-Signal Plate Current (2 tubes) | 79 mA | 92 mA |
| Zero-Signal Grid No. 2 Current (2 tubes) | 5.0 mA | 4.0 mA |
| Max.-Signal Grid No. 2 Current (2 tubes) | 13.0 mA | 13.5 mA |
| Effective Load Resistance (Plate-to-Plate) | 10,000 Ω | 8,000 Ω |
| Total Harmonic Distortion | 5% | 3.5% |
| Max.-Signal Power Output | 10 W | 14 W |
The maximum circuit values for push-pull operation restrict the Grid No. 1 circuit resistance to 0.1 MΩ for fixed-bias configurations and 0.5 MΩ for cathode-bias configurations. To prevent excessive grid circuit resistance from causing thermal runaway, transformer- or impedance-coupling devices are recommended.
The 12V6GT is also rated for use as a vertical-deflection amplifier in television receivers. For this application, the tube is triode-connected, with Grid No. 2 tied directly to the plate. The ratings are specified for operation in a standard 525-line, 30-frame television system.
The maximum ratings are defined under both Design-Center and Design-Maximum systems:
In vertical-deflection service, the pulse duration of the peak positive-pulse plate voltage must not exceed 15% of a single vertical scanning cycle, which corresponds to a maximum duration of 2.5 milliseconds.
Additionally, when operating in stages utilizing grid-leak bias, an adequate cathode-bias resistor or other protective means must be employed to safeguard the tube against excessive current in the event that excitation is lost.
The performance of the 12V6GT is characterized by its plate current () and screen current () behavior under varying electrode potentials.
At a typical screen voltage () of 250 V, the plate characteristics show a sharp knee at low plate voltages, which is characteristic of beam power tubes. This sharp knee allows for a wide plate voltage swing, maximizing power output and efficiency.
When analyzing the operation characteristics as a function of load resistance (with a plate and screen supply of 250 V, a grid bias of -12.5 V, and an input signal of 8.8 V RMS), the power output peaks near the rated load resistance of 5000 Ω. At this optimal load, the second harmonic distortion is minimized, while the third harmonic distortion remains low, ensuring high-fidelity audio reproduction. If the load resistance is increased beyond the rated value, the third harmonic distortion rises significantly, and the power output begins to fall.
