Description

1500T — Medium-Mu Power Triode

The 1500T is a medium-mu, high-vacuum transmitting triode designed for use as an amplifier, oscillator, or modulator. It features a maximum plate dissipation rating of 1500 watts and is capable of operating at plate voltages up to 8000 volts at frequencies up to 40 MHz. Cooling of the anode is achieved primarily through radiation from the plate, which operates at a visibly red-orange temperature at maximum dissipation, supplemented by forced air circulation around the envelope and seals.

Construction and Mechanical Specifications

The 1500T is constructed with a thoriated tungsten filament and is housed in a glass envelope. It is designed for vertical mounting, either base up or base down. The physical dimensions and mechanical limits of the tube are as follows:

  • Maximum Overall Length: 17.0 inches (431.80 mm)
  • Maximum Diameter: 7.125 inches (180.98 mm)
  • Net Weight: 3.5 pounds (36 oz / 1020 g)
  • Shipping Weight (Average): 8.5 pounds
  • Base: Special 4-pin, No. 5005B
  • Basing Configuration: RMA type 4BD
  • Recommended Socket: Johnson 124-214 or equivalent
  • Recommended Heat-Dissipating Connectors: HR-8 for the plate terminal; HR-8 or HR-9 for the grid terminal
  • Maximum Operating Temperature (Plate and Base Seals): 225°C

To prevent damage from severe vibration and shock, flexible connecting straps must be used between the grid and plate terminals and their external circuits.

Cooling Requirements

The envelope and seals of the 1500T require artificial cooling during operation. Envelope cooling can be accomplished using an ordinary 8-inch or 10-inch fan located approximately one foot from the tube, directing air at the middle of the envelope to ensure uniform cooling.

The grid, plate, and filament seals require dedicated forced-air cooling:

  • Grid and Plate Seals: Each seal requires a minimum air flow of 2 cubic feet per minute. The air for the grid seal is typically fed through the grid connector.
  • Filament Seals and Base: Base cooling requires an air flow of 2.5 cubic feet per minute directed up through the bottom of the base toward the filament press. The base features a 1-inch diameter hole for this purpose.
  • Static Pressure Requirements: If a socket with a 1-inch matching hole and manifold is used, a static pressure of less than 0.1 inch of water is required. If a socket with a 1/4-inch pipe inlet is used, a static pressure of 5.5 inches of water is required to maintain the necessary 2.5 cubic feet per minute volume.

Suitable electrical interlocks must be incorporated into the system to automatically remove plate and filament voltages if the cooling air supply is interrupted.

Electrical Characteristics and Filament Ratings

The 1500T features a thoriated tungsten filament requiring a highly stable voltage supply. The electrical characteristics of the filament and the tube's internal structure are detailed below:

  • Grid-Filament (CgfC_{gf}): 9.9 pF (Range: 7.5 to 12.5 pF)
  • Plate-Filament (CpfC_{pf}): 1.5 pF (Maximum: 2.0 pF)

To ensure reliable electrical contact and distribute the high filament current, all four socket terminals must be utilized, employing two terminals for each connection to the filament supply.

Absolute Maximum Ratings

The maximum ratings for the 1500T vary depending on the class of service. These ratings are absolute limits and must not be exceeded under any operating conditions.

Operational Guidelines and Calculations

Grid Dissipation Calculation

The power dissipated by the grid of the 1500T must be kept below the absolute maximum rating of 125 watts. Grid dissipation (PgP_g) can be calculated using the following formula:

Pg=ecmp×IcP_g = e_{cmp} \times I_c

Where:

  • PgP_g = Grid dissipation in watts
  • ecmpe_{cmp} = Peak positive grid voltage (measured via a peak voltmeter connected between filament and grid)
  • IcI_c = DC grid current in amperes

In applications where plate loading varies widely, such as RF heating oscillators, designers must ensure that grid dissipation does not exceed 125 watts under any loading condition.

Bias Voltage and Excitation Protection

While there is no maximum limit on the negative bias voltage, using values significantly higher than those listed in the typical operating conditions yields little advantage. If grid bias is obtained primarily via a grid leak resistor, protective circuitry must be implemented to prevent excessive plate dissipation in the event that RF excitation is lost. The grid bias resistor should be adjustable to facilitate precise adjustment of bias voltage and plate current from tube to tube.

Plate Dissipation and Tuning

Under normal operating conditions, plate dissipation must not exceed 1500 watts (or 1000 watts in plate-modulated service). During brief tuning procedures, plate dissipation is permitted to exceed the maximum rating for short periods. At its maximum rated dissipation of 1500 watts, the plate of the 1500T will glow with a visibly red-orange color.

Characteristic Curves and Performance

The performance of the 1500T is characterized by its constant current curves and driving power relationships:

  • Constant Current Characteristics: These curves map grid voltage against plate voltage for various constant values of plate current and grid current. They illustrate the triode's behavior across its operating envelope, showing that plate current remains highly controllable even at high plate voltages.
  • Driving Power vs. Power Output: Performance charts at plate voltages of 5000 V, 6000 V, and 7000 V demonstrate the relationship between plate efficiency, power output, and grid driving power. These charts reflect combined grid and bias losses only, excluding external circuit losses. They show that as plate voltage increases, higher power outputs can be achieved with relatively modest increases in driving power, provided the load impedance and bias are optimized.

Technical Summary

The 1500T is a high-power, medium-mu transmitting triode featuring a thoriated tungsten filament, an average amplification factor of 24, and a transconductance of 10,000 µmhos. Capable of handling up to 8000 V on the plate and dissipating up to 1500 W continuously, it is highly suited for demanding RF power amplification, Class-C telegraphy, plate-modulated telephony, and high-power Class-B audio modulator applications. Safe operation requires careful attention to forced-air cooling of the envelope, base, and seals, alongside protective interlocks and adjustable grid bias systems to manage grid and plate dissipation limits.
