Description

12AJ7 — Triode-Heptode Vacuum Tube

The 12AJ7 is a 9-pin miniature triode-heptode vacuum tube designed primarily for use in transformer-less AM/FM receivers. It serves multiple functions, including frequency converter, intermediate frequency (IF) amplifier, and radio frequency (RF) amplifier. By combining a triode and a heptode system within a single small-button Noval envelope, the 12AJ7 enables compact and efficient front-end designs in consumer radio equipment.

Construction, Heater, and Pinout

The 12AJ7 is housed in a T6 1/2 glass envelope with a small-button Noval 9-pin (E9-1) base. It has a maximum overall length of 2 5/8 inches, a maximum seated height of 2 3/8 inches, and a maximum diameter of 7/8 inch. The tube is designed to operate in any mounting position.

The tube features an indirectly heated cathode system. The heater is designed for series-string or transformer-less receiver power supplies, requiring a nominal voltage of 12.6 V and a current of 0.15 A. This corresponds to a calculated heater power dissipation of 1.89 W.

The E9-1 base pin connections are assigned as follows:

  • Pin 1: Grid No. 3 (Heptode) [G3H]
  • Pin 2: Grid No. 1 (Heptode) [G1H]
  • Pin 3: Cathode, Grid No. 5 (Heptode), and Internal Shield [K, G5H, IS]
  • Pin 4: Heater [H]
  • Pin 5: Heater [H]
  • Pin 6: Plate (Triode) [PT]
  • Pin 7: Grid (Triode) [GT]
  • Pin 8: Plate (Heptode) [PH]
  • Pin 9: Grid No. 2 and Grid No. 4 (Heptode) [G2H, G4H]

Direct Interelectrode Capacitances

The direct interelectrode capacitances of the 12AJ7, measured without an external shield, are detailed below:

Triode Unit

  • Grid No. 1 to Plate: 1.0 pF
  • Input: 2.6 pF
  • Output: 2.1 pF

Heptode Unit

  • Grid No. 1 to Plate: 0.006 pF (maximum)
  • Input: 4.8 pF
  • Output: 7.9 pF
  • Grid No. 3 to All: 6.0 pF

Inter-unit Capacitance

  • Plate to Plate: 0.2 pF

The extremely low grid-to-plate capacitance of the heptode unit (0.006 pF maximum) is highly beneficial for stable RF and IF amplification, minimizing unwanted feedback.

Typical Operation and Electrical Characteristics

The 12AJ7 can be operated in three primary configurations: as a heptode frequency converter, a heptode RF/IF amplifier, or a triode Class A1 amplifier.

Cutoff Characteristics

  • RF/IF Amplifier Service: The heptode transconductance (GmG_m) is reduced to approximately 20 μ℧ when the Grid No. 1 voltage is increased negatively to -16.5 V.
  • Converter Service: The heptode conversion transconductance (GcG_c) is reduced to approximately 6.2 μ℧ when the Grid No. 1 voltage is increased negatively to -14.5 V.

Typical Application Circuit

In typical receiver designs, the 12AJ7 is utilized as a combined AM frequency converter and FM IF amplifier stage, working alongside other tubes such as the 12DT8 (FM converter) and 12BA6 (IF amplifier).

AM Frequency Converter Operation

In AM mode, the triode and heptode sections operate together to perform frequency conversion:

  1. Local Oscillator: The triode section acts as the local oscillator. Its plate (Pin 6) is coupled to the AM oscillator coil, and its grid (Pin 7) is connected to the heptode's Grid No. 3 (Pin 1). This grid-to-grid connection is returned to ground through a grid resistor (typically 47 kΩ to 50 kΩ) and coupled via a 50 pF capacitor to the oscillator tank circuit.
  2. Mixer: The AM antenna signal is applied to the heptode's Grid No. 1 (Pin 2), which is also connected to the automatic volume control (AVC) line. The local oscillator signal injected into Grid No. 3 modulates the electron stream, and the mixed intermediate frequency (IF) signal is taken from the heptode plate (Pin 8) to the first IF transformer.

FM IF Amplifier Operation

In FM mode, the heptode section functions as an IF amplifier stage. The input signal from the preceding FM converter (such as a 12DT8) is switched to the heptode's Grid No. 1 (Pin 2). The screen grids (Grid No. 2 and Grid No. 4, Pin 9) are tied together, bypassed to ground with a 0.05 μF capacitor, and supplied with operating voltage from the +B line (nominally 100 V) through a series resistor. The cathode (Pin 3) is connected directly to ground.

Technical Summary

The 12AJ7 is a versatile 9-pin miniature triode-heptode designed for transformer-less AM/FM receivers. It features a 12.6 V, 0.15 A heater suitable for series-string operation. The heptode section provides a conversion transconductance of 620 μ℧ as a converter and a transconductance of 2,000 μ℧ as an RF/IF amplifier, with excellent isolation provided by its low grid-to-plate capacitance of 0.006 pF maximum. The triode section features an amplification factor of 22 and a transconductance of 3,700 μ℧, making it highly effective as a local oscillator in frequency-conversion applications.
